As promised in my last blog, I wanted to share some of the real stories of the people that inspired us to start Akiso Sattvik.
PCOS, or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, is a complex hormonal disorder affecting women worldwide. It disrupts the reproductive system and manifests through symptoms like irregular periods, fertility challenges, weight gain, acne, and mood swings. Beyond these visible struggles, PCOS also poses long-term risks such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease
Did you know that over the last few decades the occurrence of PCOS has escalated and today upwards of 10% menstruating people suffer from this condition and an additional 22% suffer from PCOD.
During a recent product shoot, I had the pleasure of meeting a remarkable lady, Meghna (name changed to protect her identity). Meghna was our model for the shoot. As we engaged in a conversation about our fitness routines, she had the most interesting story about how yoga has played a crucial role in managing her Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
Q: How has yoga helped you manage PCOS?
A: Yoga has been a game-changer for me in managing PCOS. It has helped me alleviate the pain, regulate my unpredictable and heavy periods, and bring a sense of balance to my body. The asanas (poses) and pranayama (breathing exercises) specifically targeting the reproductive system have been incredibly beneficial.
Q: Need less to say being fit is very important to your line of work. Could you elaborate on how you manage this with the long hours that come with the profession?
A: As a model, maintaining a healthy weight is crucial, and PCOS condition often leads to weight gain. Adding to that long hours, remote shoot location don't always mean that I am able to maintain my workout schedule. However, I have found that Yoga, with minimal requirement of equipment has been instrumental in helping me shed those extra pounds. A practice I can easily do in between shots. The combination of physical movements, mindfulness, and deep breathing has not only improved my body's strength and flexibility but also boosted my metabolism.
Q: Apart from weight management, have you noticed any other positive changes?
A: Absolutely! Yoga has had a positive impact on my skin as well. PCOS often leads to acne and other skin issues and I experienced these breakouts quite often. The regular practice of yoga has not only cleared up my skin but also brought a natural glow.
Conclusion:
This insightful conversation with a Meghna has shed light on the transformative power of yoga in managing PCOS. From alleviating pain and regulating menstrual cycles to weight management and improved skin health, yoga has proven to be an effective holistic approach. Whether you're facing PCOS or any other health challenge, incorporating yoga into your routine may offer immense benefits. So, why not give it a try and embark on a journey to better health and well-being?
